The Pembroke Curling Centre is the third oldest in eastern Ontario and Western Quebec.
For the 150th anniversary of the Pembroke Curling Centre, President Elect Bill Cheliak, says they have a number of events planned to involve the community and curling members.
Cheliak says they started out curling on the Ottawa River back in 1872 using iron stones and moved onto their first indoor ice surface back in the 1940’s.
Cheliak says the iron curling stones weighed up to 80 pounds and were used in Pembroke until 1953 when they switched over to granite.
He adds they used to use corn brooms to sweep, but notes that technology has also come a long way.
Past President of the Pembroke Curling Centre and long time curler Emile Robert says being an older club has advantages when it comes to provincial tournament play.
Robert says the oldest club will get the hammer on the first end.
In 2022/2023, the Pembroke Curling Centre celebrates 150-years in the community.
An open house event was held on Saturday, February 26th, 2022, featuring some of the historic memorabilia and providing an opportunity to try out the sport.
The Pembroke Curling Centre, located at 428 Herbert Street next to the Kinsmen Pool, recently underwent extensive renovations to make the facility fully accessible.
More events will be planned throughout the year as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations for the Pembroke Curling Centre.
