The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reminding residents to be cautious around frozen lakes, rivers and streams.
Ice may look tempting but you cannot determine its strength by how it looks. There are many factors that contribute to its condition including thickness, currents, temperature, cracks, snow cover, water depth and size of the body of water.
There are a number of things you should take with you to help in case of an emergency including picks that can be used to grip the ice to pull yourself out. Wear a thermal protective buoyant suit.
Take along a small personal safety kit that includes waterproof matches, pocket knife, compass and whistle.
Never go out alone and always tell someone your planned destination and when you expect to return.
Avoid unfamiliar areas/unknown ice, travelling on ice at night and slushy/thawed ice.
Always remember that NO ICE IS WITHOUT RISK.
