A silent witness will take place at a Pembroke church tomorrow (June 25th, 2021), following the discovery of 751 unmarked graves at the site of a former residential school on Saskatchewan’s Cowessess First Nation.
The latest discovery comes after 215 bodies were found on the grounds of a former residential school in Kamloops, B.C.
Duane Aucoin tells myFM he will be doing a silent witness for 751 minutes on the steps of the Catholic Cathedral (188 Renfrew Street) in Pembroke.
Aucoin says he will spend one minute for every child discovered in the unmarked graves at the Marieval Catholic Indian Residential School.
Residents are encouraged to join Aucoin for as long as possible between 7:51am and 8:22pm.
Chief Bobby Cameron, head of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations, says this is just the beginning of grave discoveries.
He says First Nations expect and demand a full public inquiry, adding they deserve justice.
The Marieval Indian Residential School operated until 1997 in Saskatchewan.
