They still have to be approved by Health Canada, but if and when they are, the federal government has reached a deal to buy 7.9 million COVID-19 rapid-test devices from American health care company Abbott.
Public Procurement Minister Anita Anand says the nasal swab tests provide results in approximately 15 minutes.
Critics have been calling on Ottawa to approve the devices, given the surge in testing demand in recent weeks.
But Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the decision is ultimately up to federal scientists.
