It’s the season to be Bear Wise, and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has some bear-wise tips about precautions we should be taking to minimize human-bear contact. Spokesperson Jolante Kowalski says avoid enticing bears with cooking smells; wherever the critters go, they follow their nose.
Kowalski says although there are many containers advertised as bear-proof, and most all of them are good, you can do as effective a job by removing the scent of food from your environment. You shouldn’t need them unless you are planning a prolonged absence. The MNRF spokesperson says pick up freshly fallen fruit from any of your property’s trees on a daily basis. Kowalski says there’s a full list of tips and precautionary advice on the Bear Wise website.
