The third-annual Emergency and Protective Services United event is just a few weeks away, raising money to support several local charities and highlighting the work first responders do in the Ottawa Valley.
Participant and organizer Tyler Burgess says the three charities benefitting from the event support people all over the region.
Burgess’ father was a firefighter in the town of Russell, who helped create a similar event there when he was growing up. Burgess says his work on our local event is a way of carrying on his father’s legacy.
The event is being held at the Petawawa Civic Centre, with the main event being an obstacle course that’s set to be navigated by firefighters, police officers, paramedics and other emergency personnel from across the Ottawa Valley.
The event will also feature equipment showcases, local vendors, a silent auction and a children’s obstacle course for younger attendees.
Burgess’ two sons Hayden and Jameson are both excited for the obstacle course. Jameson says part of the fun will include attempting to navigate it with a dummy on their backs, to simulate how firefighters rescue people from dangerous situations.
Hayden, for his part, added that the equipment showcases are a personal highlight for him.
In terms of fundraising, Burgess says title sponsor Fresco’s Tap and Grill has created a “hero salad” and a “hero daquiri” available for purchase at the restaurant, with proceeds going towards St. Joseph’s Food Bank, the Petawawa Pantry and Renfrew County Special Olympics.
Tickets for the silent auction will also go towards the charities, as well as donations from the first responders taking part in the obstacle course.
The event begins at 10:00 a.m. on September 12th at the Petawawa Civic Centre. The other main title sponsor, Renfrew / Ottawa West KOA, has also provided funding to help ensure the event happens and to support the three charities.
