The Ontario Provincial Police is warning residents about a cellphone service provider scam being reported across the East Region.
Police say fraudsters are posing as representatives of legitimate cellphone companies and contacting victims with offers such as discounts, upgraded plans or new devices.
In some cases, the scammers remain on the phone while directing victims to log into their legitimate cellphone accounts. They then ask for account information, passwords, PINs or security codes.
Police say scammers have also convinced victims to open accounts with different service providers and obtain new cellphones or tablets. Victims may be asked to provide identification, including a driver’s licence or Social Insurance Number.
Once the device is delivered, the fraudster may claim the wrong item was shipped and instruct the victim to send it to another address.
Police say victims can then be left responsible for the cost of the devices and related account charges.
The OPP says warning signs include unsolicited calls, texts or emails offering deals, pressure to act immediately, requests for security or multi-factor authentication codes and instructions to open an account with another provider.
Residents are advised to end unexpected calls claiming to be from their cellphone provider and contact the company directly using the number on their bill, account documents or official website.
Police also say people should never provide passwords, PINs, security codes or personal information during an unexpected contact, and should not ship a cellphone or tablet to an address provided by an unknown caller.
Anyone who receives a device they did not order should contact the service provider immediately to confirm the proper return process.
People who believe they have been targeted should contact their financial institution, local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
Fraud can be reported through the centre’s Fraud Reporting System or by calling 1-888-495-8501.
