Back to school is coming a little earlier than some students might expect this year, according to the Chief Executive Officer of the Renfrew County District School Board.
Kristen Niemi says her team, along with the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board, have made the decision to start the 2026-27 school year on Wednesday, September 2nd.
That’s prior to the Labour Day long weekend, which is usually the last weekend of students’ summer breaks before the start of a new academic year.
According to Niemi, the decision was made as a result of Labour Day falling later than usual this year:
In order to avoid pushing the end of the school year atypically late, Niemi says the two local English-language boards agreed to start the school year before Labour Day instead.
Niemi says she appreciates parents’ patience and support amid the unusual circumstances.
She also issued a reminder for parents who need assistance with registration or other issues in the leadup to the start of the school year, saying staff members will begin returning to local schools over the coming weeks.
On the French side of the local education system, students attending schools within the Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario and the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est – the local French public and Catholic boards – will return to classrooms on August 25th, except for a few Catholic boards which start their school years on the 17th and 18th.
