Ontario’s Minister of Energy and Mines spent a couple days in the Ottawa Valley this week, touring and speaking to workers at two of the region’s biggest employers. Stephen Lecce’s first stop was CNL in Chalk River on Monday, where he toured the Tritium Laboratory and viewed the construction of Unity-2, Canada’s first fusion fuel cycle test facility being advanced jointly by CNL and Fusion Fuel Cycles. The visit also included Universal Cells, which support both Canada’s CANDU nuclear fleet and the production of life-saving medical isotopes. Then on Tuesday, it was off to OPG’s Stewartville Generating Station. Lecce says it was important for him to see the facility that adds 180 megawatts to Ontario’s power grid.
Accompanying him on the tours was MPP Billy Denault.
Between now and 2031, OPG is overhauling Stewartville’s five generating units, with one unit being overhauled each year.
