The Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation is preparing to welcome visitors for its annual traditional pow-wow in a few weeks.
The 37th iteration of the yearly tradition is set to take place on August 15th and 16th this year, with a theme of “honour our elders.” The pow-wow is taking place at the Pikwakanagan Cultural Grounds on 109 Pakwanagemag Inamo.
A poster for the event shared by the First Nation says its master of ceremonies this year will be elder Fred McGregor.
Whitetail Cree will be the host drum group, with co-host drumming by Spirit Wolf.
A grand entry ceremony will be held on both days at noon, led by head dancers Randy Kakegamick and Taylor Ozawanimke.
An additional grand entrance is also scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on the 15th.
Admission to the event is free, and residents and attendees are encouraged to enjoy the traditional dancing and drumming, cultural demonstrations, family friendly activities and opportunities to learn more about local Algonquin culture.
Donations to help support the event will be accepted, and attendees are also reminded that alcohol, illegal drugs and pets aren’t allowed on the Cultural Grounds.
