Despite some sinister-looking storm clouds at points and an ongoing heat wave, Pembroke’s Canada Day celebrations were a huge success.
That’s according to Mayor Ron Gervais, who said the excitement began on June 30th in Riverside Park.
Gervais said the formal parts of the city’s traditional celebrations, including the raising of the flag at the local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, are his personal favourite, although he considers getting the chance to see kids enjoying the family-friendly fun throughout the day to be another highlight.
Activities at Riverside Park were halted ahead of schedule on the 30th because of significant rainfall, and they resumed shortly before noon on July 1st. The fun made its way to the Legion hall on Pembroke Street East a few hours later with live music and a community barbecue.
Afterwards, people returned to Riverside Park for more fun, more live music, and the chance to see some fireworks. There was some concern that another thunderstorm could put a damper on residents’ fun, but according to councillor Ian Kuehl, it was clear the show would be able to go on by about an hour before it was set to take place.
Both Kuehl and Gervais wished residents a happy Canada Day, saying it’s an important opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate the start of the summer.
