Ottawa River Transit received some recognition for its strides to improve public transportation in the Ottawa Valley, and Pembroke’s Director of Corporate Services says the team behind it is proud.
The initiative has received the Institute of Transportation Engineers National Capital Section’s Project of the Year award. Angela Lochtie, alongside Left Turn Right Turn transit consultant Jordan Papazoglou, accepted the award on May 15th.
Ottawa River Transit is the city’s three-year on-demand public transit pilot program that allows people in the community to request trips within the city as they need them.
Lochtie says, for her, the award is a reflection of the city’s strong planning and their choice to work with the right partners for the job.
In terms of ridership, Lochtie says the service has significantly outperformed expectations each month in its first year of operation.
Papazoglou says the service was designed to maximize capacity to avoid the need to expand it immediately.
The service is expected to continue to mature and grow over the next two years.
