A historic military aircraft is scheduled to fly over Garrison Petawawa on Friday as part of a change of command ceremony for the 2nd Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery.
The flypast, organized by 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group, will feature Vintage Wings’ Cessna L-19 Bird Dog, an aircraft historically used for aerial observation and forward air control missions.
The aircraft is expected to depart the Pembroke Airfield at 10 a.m. and travel toward Garrison Petawawa at an altitude of approximately 1,000 feet.
Military officials say the Bird Dog will make at least one pass over Simmons Parade Square during the change of command parade before returning to Pembroke Airfield.
The flypast is being held as part of the ceremonial transfer of command within the regiment, a longstanding military tradition marking the formal handover of leadership responsibilities.
The aircraft is expected to land back at the Pembroke Airfield at approximately 11:30 a.m.
The Cessna L-19 Bird Dog was widely used by military forces during the Cold War era for reconnaissance, artillery spotting and communication duties.
