Police are urging residents to stay vigilant after a series of distraction thefts were reported in communities across the region.
The Ontario Provincial Police say the incidents typically involve suspects using deception to steal valuables, often jewelry, from unsuspecting victims. Investigators say the thefts can happen within seconds and have been reported in locations ranging from public spaces and parking lots to private residences.
Police note that while older adults are often targeted, people of all ages can become victims.
According to the OPP, suspects frequently work in pairs or groups and use friendly conversation, emotional appeals, or offers of assistance to gain trust before moving into a victim’s personal space.
In some cases, victims have reported strangers touching their hands or wrists, offering hugs, or placing necklaces around their necks, only to later discover valuable jewelry was missing. Other incidents have involved suspects claiming to exchange jewelry for items of greater value, which are later found to be counterfeit or worthless.
Authorities say some offenders use fabricated stories involving family emergencies or financial hardship to persuade victims to hand over money or valuables.
Police are encouraging residents to be cautious around unfamiliar individuals, protect their personal space, and report suspicious activity to local authorities.
