The Renfrew County District School Board has approved its 2026-27 operating budget, maintaining investments in student supports while making staffing adjustments to address ongoing financial pressures.
Board officials say the budget is designed to provide students with a high-quality education while ensuring schools remain safe, welcoming and financially sustainable. The spending plan includes targeted investments in mental health services, educational assistant staffing, information technology and facilities operations.
The board acknowledged that some staffing changes will affect employees and school communities, describing the decisions as difficult but necessary.
A statement released by the RCDSB to the media on June 18th reads in part that:
“Our focus as a Board is to ensure a high and consistent quality of education, prioritizing student achievement and well-being while maintaining a balanced budget. Changes to staffing complements across the District reflect this focus, and align with feedback the Board has received from families regarding the need for increased specialized and mental health services for students. This aligns with the strategic priorities outlined in RCDSB’s 2026-30 Strategic Plan.”
Officials say previous cost-cutting efforts over the past three years focused largely on central administration and operating budgets. However, rising costs and changing enrolment patterns have continued to place pressure on finances across the school system.
The board is also responding to a gradual decline in student enrolment and long-term projections that require resources to be redistributed to areas of greatest need.
Additional provincial funding helped ease some budget pressures, though much of the money is earmarked for specific initiatives, including salary increases, dual-credit programming, classroom supply allocations for elementary teachers and curriculum resources.
Trustees thanked staff members for their contributions and pledged to continue working with families and school communities as the changes are implemented ahead of the new school year.
