A death investigation in Greater Madawaska Township is now a murder investigation.
Ontario Provincial Police say 61-year-old Geraldine Fulcher of Calabogie has been identified as the person found dead on Lanark Road earlier this month.
Police say officers with the Renfrew OPP were called to the area just before 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6. One person was found dead at the scene.
A postmortem examination has since confirmed Fulcher’s death was a homicide.
OPP say investigators believe the killing was targeted. Police say there is no indication of a broader threat to public safety.
OPP say they are aware of community concerns and want to reassure the public that the investigation is being taken seriously.
Police say residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area as the investigation continues.
The Renfrew County OPP Crime Unit is leading the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch. The Office of the Chief Coroner, the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service and OPP Forensic Identification Services are also involved.
OPP are asking the public not to share unconfirmed information about the case. Police say rumours can cause more harm to Fulcher’s family and may interfere with the investigation.
More details will be released when they become available.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Renfrew OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Anonymous tips can be made through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or online at ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
