The Renfrew County and District Health Unit has launched its annual Yellow Ribbon Campaign, aimed at reducing animal bites and promoting safer interactions with pets.
The campaign encourages pet owners to tie a yellow ribbon, bandana or bow to a pet’s leash or collar as a signal that the animal needs space.
Health officials say reported animal bites and scratches have been increasing across the region, though many incidents are preventable.
David Tantalo, manager of healthy environments at the health unit, says while the risk of contracting rabies from domestic animals is low, bites can still be disruptive and distressing for those involved.
He says the campaign is focused on awareness, noting that a yellow marker is a clear sign an animal may be nervous, unwell, in training or otherwise in need of distance.
The initiative is supported by local partners, including veterinarians, municipalities, pet care businesses and community organizations. Yellow ribbons are available at the health unit’s Pembroke office and participating locations.
Officials are reminding residents to ask permission before approaching animals, avoid unfamiliar pets and supervise children when interacting with animals.
Anyone bitten or scratched is advised to wash the wound thoroughly, seek medical attention and report the incident to the health unit.
