The provincial government is providing Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation with over a million dollars in healthcare funding.
Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP Billy Denault made the announcement at an event in the first nation on Thursday, April 30th.
The province is providing $1,049,900 of funding in total, through a partnership with the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation Indigenous Primary Care organization.
Denault says the funding is part of the province’s Primary Care Action Plan, a multi-billion-dollar project working to connect everyone in the province with a primary care provider.
Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation Chief Greg Sarazin thanked the province, and said that working collaboratively with regional partners is helping to build an integrated system that contributes to the health of the entire region.
Sarazin added that the First Nation looks forward to strengthening its relationships, and hopes the funding leads to real, lasting improvements for its residents’ lives.
Maureen Sarazin Tomasini, the Manager of Health Services and Executive Director for Primary Healthcare at Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation, said she was excited about the funding, but also nervous due to the current state of staffing in the healthcare industry.
Sarazin Tomasini says the nation is working on exploring a variety of new healthcare partnerships for the future.
