Health partners in Renfrew County are urging residents to carry naloxone and avoid using drugs alone after a sharp rise in suspected overdose deaths early this year.
The Renfrew County and District Drug Strategy says 10 suspected drug toxicity deaths were recorded in the first three months of 2026—about three times the quarterly average seen in 2025.
Officials say efforts are underway to respond, including mobile outreach services, drug-checking options and plans for a Homelessness and Addictions Recovery Treatment hub and intake centre. Expanding access to naloxone remains a key focus, with kits available free through numerous partners and most local pharmacies.
Co-chair Patti Smith says the figures highlight the unpredictability of the unregulated drug supply and the need for continued vigilance.
Authorities say illicit fentanyl remains the main driver of overdoses, with other substances increasingly detected, adding to the risk.
