Deputy Mayor Brian Abdallah has officially announced his intention to run for Mayor of Pembroke in this October’s municipal election.
This past Saturday, Abdallah posed in front of Pembroke City Hall and stated that he will be going head-to-head with current Mayor Ron Gervais for the city’s top position.
Abdallah says his bid for mayor comes as he prepares to step away from a long career in education.
The 64-year-old, a lifelong Pembroke resident, said his decision is also rooted in deep family connections to the city. Abdallah is married to Mary Mercer and noted his father, George Abdallah, was both a local businessman and a former mayor.
Abdallah is currently in his second term on council as deputy mayor, and he says the time is right in his life to take the next step.
Current Mayor Ron Gervais announced his intention to re-run for the position a few weeks ago, and so far, Abdallah is the only challenger in the mayoral race.
In his official press release issued this Saturday, Abdallah said, in part:
“As a second-term councillor and current Deputy Mayor, I have had the privilege of working alongside fellow council members, dedicated residents, local businesses, community groups, and partners across our city. Together, we have made progress. But I know we can do more. I know we can build a Pembroke that is safer, stronger, more affordable, and full of opportunity for everyone.”
Among Abdallah’s many goals as Mayor is continuing to advocate for safety and wellness in the community, a platform he is best known for through his work with the Community Watch Program.
The deadline to file a nomination to be a council or school trustee candidate for the upcoming municipal election in October is Friday, August 21, 2026, at 2 p.m.
