The Ontario legislature unanimously backed a motion this week calling for an annual celebration recognizing the role of rural communities, following debate at Queen’s Park on March 31, 2026.
The motion, introduced by MPP Billy Denault, calls on the province to designate the third week of September each year as Rural Ontario Week, highlighting the economic and cultural contributions of rural regions across the province.
Speaking during the debate, Denault said rural communities remain central to Ontario’s economic strength, noting their impact across multiple industries.
“Many people do not fully appreciate the scale of what rural Ontario contributes to this province,” Denault said. “These communities are key drivers of manufacturing, natural resources, forestry, tourism and agriculture. In 2024 alone, rural Ontario added more than $116.5 billion to the province’s GDP, which reflects the strength and resilience of these regions.”
Denault added that the proposed recognition week would provide an opportunity to highlight rural achievements and community pride.
Opposition members also backed the proposal, with MPP Laurie Scott saying rural areas play a defining role in Ontario’s broader cultural and economic fabric.
With unanimous support from all parties, Ontario is set to become the first province to formally designate a recurring week dedicated to celebrating rural life and contributions.
