The Ontario Provincial Police says officers with its Upper Ottawa Valley detachment will take part in a provincewide traffic safety campaign targeting seatbelt use over the Easter Long Weekend.
Police say the campaign runs from April 3 to 6 and will focus on ensuring drivers and passengers are properly restrained, regardless of trip length. Officers are also reminding motorists that drivers are responsible for ensuring passengers under 16 are wearing seatbelts.
The fine for failing to wear a seatbelt is $240 and carries two demerit points.
While seatbelt compliance is the primary focus, police say officers will also be watching for what they call the “Big Four” contributing factors in collisions: impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving and failure to use proper restraints.
The OPP says officers will be highly visible throughout the Upper Ottawa Valley during the campaign as part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety.
