Pembroke Regional Hospital has earned national recognition after being designated a Using Blood Wisely Hospital by Choosing Wisely Canada in partnership with Canadian Blood Services.
The designation recognizes hospitals that meet strict national benchmarks for transfusion practices, ensuring patients receive blood only when clinically necessary. PRH joins a group of 190 hospitals across the country committed to protecting Canada’s blood supply.
To qualify, hospitals must demonstrate that at least 65 per cent of transfusions follow a single-unit approach, with reassessment before additional blood is given. In addition, at least 80 per cent of stable patients with blood levels above recommended thresholds must be managed without transfusion.
The hospital also credited its partnership with the Eastern Ontario Regional Laboratory Association for helping strengthen laboratory and transfusion medicine services.
