Ontario Provincial Police in the east region have charged 67 drivers with impaired operation since launching their annual Festive RIDE campaign on Nov. 20.
Police say 18 of those charges were laid in the past week as officers continue roadside checks from Quinte West to the Quebec border and through the Ottawa Valley. More than 800 RIDE stops have been conducted so far.
Drivers charged with impaired operation receive an immediate 90-day licence suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment. Each person is also required to appear in court.
Officers have issued another 15 three-day licence suspensions to motorists who registered in the “warn range” on roadside alcohol-screening devices.
The Festive RIDE program runs until January 1st and OPP say drivers can expect checks at any time of day, on highways, rural roads or in urban areas.
Police are urging the public to call 911 if they suspect someone is driving while impaired, saying such calls could prevent serious injuries or deaths.
