A vigil in memory of the fourteen women killed at École Polytechnique in Montreal 36 years ago was held at the Mackay Street Carefor location on Sunday.
Dozens were in attendance as the names of the fourteen women were read and a red rose was placed in a vase in their memory. Among those participating were OPP Inspector Stephan Neufeld and Pembroke Mayor Ron Gervais.
The Reverend Gillian Hoyer was the guest speaker at the event, and she focused on the hope we all need to hold as we look back at the past and ahead to the future:
Bryonie Baxter, representing the Board of Directors of Bernadette McCann House, welcomed guests and reminded them of the mission set out by the organization, which it has upheld since its inception in 1979:
During the ceremony, Nicole Baker laid a white rose in memory of all women and children killed by acts of violence. Brady Smith presented a pink rose honouring the women and children who are still living with violence, and Mayor Ron Gervais laid a purple rose as a symbol of hope for the future.
