The Royal Canadian Legion is a busy place pretty much all year long but it’s right around this time that the members become especially focused around the most pivotal day of the year for the RCL: Remembrance Day
Sherry Wilson is the principal organizer of the annual poppy and wreath campaign for RCL Chapter 72 which is a big job under normal circumstances, however, this year she was met with an unforeseen challenge that threw the whole Chapter for a loop. The recent postal strike put a damper of their ability to get wreath order cards out in a timely manner. Fortunately, Sherry was ahead of the game when the strike happened:
Despite the setback The Pembroke Legion is ready to provide the 150 or so wreaths purchased by various individuals and businesses in Pembroke to be laid at The Cenotaph in honour of the person of their choosing on November 11th.
The poppies that The Legion provides are the other big piece of the puzzle and Sherry says that this aspect of the annual push went smoothly despite the strike. The number of poppies ordered and distributed to various locations across the city might surprise you:
Sherry was especially happy to have had a helper this year who could carry wreaths up and down the stairs which made an already challenging task a lot easier to manage, she says:
Following the ceremony at The Cenotaph all are welcome to The Legion for a hot bowl of soup, and a chance to chat with many of the members of The Legion for whom this day means so very much.
