The annual Terry Fox Run is a cherished Canadian tradition, uniting nearly 600 communities from coast to coast — big and small, urban and rural, English and French. On Sunday, September 14, Pembroke RCL President Stan Halliday will carry on Terry’s legacy by helping to advance cancer research and finish the work he began.
This year’s theme is “Finish It” and Stan indeed will finish it as he gears up for his 45th year participating in the Run. He admits that his running days are over and he will walk the route but also knows that just showing up for the cause is what’s most important. Stan remembers how he came to run for the first time:
The cause of fighting cancer is one near and dear to the heart of Halliday as the disease has touched his life through family members and friends over the years. Stan comes from a very large family and unfortunately the list of victims in his life is a long one:
Over the years the number of Legion Members participating in the run has dwindled so the RCL folks decided to do something a little different this year that can potentially involve the entire community:
The run will start at the Legion at 9:30AM Sunday and will wrap up back at the Legion where a BBQ will welcome anyone who cares to join in with members and community members alike. If you’re worried about whether you might not finish the course or how long it might take, Stan has a last comment to allay and fears about participating:
Good luck to everyone who participates in the Run this Sunday!
