Are you a senior and having a challenge understanding and keeping up with technological advances? You are not alone and the Petawawa Library has a solution.
Vicki Alexopoulos-Read is Seniors Tech Program Co-ordinator at the Library and she has come up with a program that helps seniors better manage the often baffling world of modern computer technology. A recent Nursing Graduate from Algonquin College, Alexopoulos -Read explains briefly how the program came about initially :
Knowing that so many seniors today are required to navigate the world of tech these days she says that the whole idea is to provide a stress-free learning environment where seniors can immerse themselves into the lessons at the pace they are comfortable with:
Alexopoulos-Read uses the term “digital literacy” as a catch phrase to describe challenges that exist for anyone in their latter years who can no longer peruse the newspapers and grocery flyers and are now learning on line banking as an example of everyday challenges.
The six week program will feature a different learning activity each week to keep it fresh with an opportunity to get some one on one instruction during the last thirty minutes of each session. The program is open to anyone over the age of 55 who lives in Petawawa. It’s free of charge, each session is 90 minutes and refreshments will be served.
The first session takes place Thursday, July 17th in the Rotary Room at the Petawawa Library and runs from 10AM to 11:30AM. Sessions will also be held at Silver Threads Seniors Club in Petawawa on Mondays also from 10AM to 11:30 AM.
