It’s the 60th Anniversary of BGC (Boys and Girls Club) and this Friday June 6th there will be a big bash here in Pembroke in celebration of this momentous occasion!
BGC was once known as The Boys and Girls Club but was changed to BGC in 2021 in an effort to encourage inclusivity, a move which Rhodina Gardner, Executive Director of the Pembroke Chapter says is a definite step in the right direction in todays social climate. She gives myFM a taste of what Club Day is all about:
The open house at 275 Pembroke Street East will feature Ry-J’s Climbing adventures, free BBQ, balloon artist, music and a cake cutting featuring local dignitaries at 5:30.
The BGC has its roots all the way back to 1965 where a gentleman known as Constable Taylor here in Pembroke wanted to do something about “wayward boys” who needed more structure in their lives. The “Pembroke Boys District Club” was born and it wasn’t until 1974 when girls where included in the club and it then became the “Pembroke Boys and Girls Club”. Inclusion, Gardner stresses, is really the key word as far as the club as a whole is concerned.
