Collection of large household goods will be happening soon for residents in the Town of Petawawa, City of Pembroke and Township of Laurentian Valley. Acceptable items must not be placed curbside earlier than Sunday, May 25. Residents are reminded that scavenging of materials that are set out for large item collection is not permitted under Municipal By-Laws.
For material to be collected, it must be properly separated into four different piles. Material is collected separately by multiple trucks:

“Residents should review the acceptable items list to ensure they are setting out correct material for collection.” States Chris Mantha, Town of Petawawa Director of Public Works. “Tires, wooden pallets and construction material as well as items in cardboard boxes or garbage bags will not be collected. It’s the responsibility of the property owner to remove any items that are not acceptable and to properly dispose of those items.”
Hazardous waste such as propane tanks, paint cans and batteries are also not collected during large item pick-up. Laurie Benjamin, General Manager of Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre explains the importance of removing batteries and flammable fluids from items placed out for collection. “When batteries or flammable liquids are not removed it increases the risk of fire not only during collection but also when managing the material once it is received at Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre. Except for scrap metal, freon appliances and electronic waste all other large item collection material is shredded using an industrial grinder. Batteries that are not removed from items can result in fires once the material is shredded.”
Residents are reminded of the other set out requirements for large item collection:
