The County of Renfrew proudly presented the 2024 Warden’s Community Service Awards on November 27, during the County Council session. The awards recognized an individual, a not-for-profit organization, and a business for their significant contributions to the community. These awards serve as a meaningful way to thank those who have made a positive impact in Renfrew County.
The recipient of the individual award was Dan Poole from Whitewater Region. Nominated by Kathy Black, Poole has dedicated countless hours to raising awareness and educating the public about water management along the Ottawa River Watershed. He has been instrumental in providing real-time updates on water conditions through his creation of the Northern Reservoirs Facebook group in 2020, helping residents stay informed about water levels and potential risks.

The Paddler Co-op in Palmer Rapids was honoured with a 2024 Warden’s Community Service Award in the not-for-profit category. The not-for-profit award was presented to Paddle Co-op of Palmer Rapids, nominated by Nikola Neskovic. After operating on rented land for two decades, the Paddle Co-op faced the opportunity to purchase its property along the Lower Madawaska River. Thanks to a grassroots community fundraising effort, over 800 people came together to save this cherished location. The co-op is now a non-profit, member-owned organization dedicated to fostering a stronger paddling community while offering some of Ontario’s most affordable youth whitewater programs.

The Valley Gazette newspaper received a 2024 Warden’s Community Service Award in the in the for-profit business category. The business award went to The Valley Gazette, a local newspaper nominated by Allison Layman. Under the leadership of Publisher Michel Lavigne, The Valley Gazette has been an essential resource for Renfrew County, offering local news, highlighting community achievements, and connecting residents. The paper has supported numerous non-profit organizations through feature stories and free advertising and has also raised funds for the St. Francis Valley Healthcare Foundation through a long-running hockey pool.
After presenting the awards, Renfrew County Warden Peter Emon congratulated the recipients, recognizing their passion and dedication. “It is an honour and a privilege to recognize the outstanding contributions of individuals, not-for-profit organizations, and businesses in our community through the Warden’s Community Service Awards,” said Warden Emon. “Their dedication and service exemplify the spirit of Renfrew County, making it a better place for all.”
These awards celebrate the positive impact of local individuals, organizations, and businesses, all of whom continue to make Renfrew County a vibrant and connected community.
