The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) UOV Detachment has initiated “Operation Decibel” to combat loud, illegal vehicle modifications. Active from August 21 to September 1, 2023, the campaign targets disruptive vehicle noise resulting from muffler removal or exhaust changes.
This move comes in response to growing noise concerns linked to modified exhaust systems. Per Section 75 (1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA), vehicles must have functional mufflers to prevent excessive noise and smoke. The use of devices like cut-outs and straight exhausts is strictly prohibited, carrying a $110 fine each.
Officers in “Operation Decibel” will also watch for other illegal vehicle changes and unsafe driving behaviors. By curbing excessive noise, the OPP aims to enhance road safety and serenity in the region.
