The City of Pembroke and the fire department are once again re-opening the conversation of recreational burning within city limits. Back in 2019, a city survey was put out, looking for resident feedback on the idea of having residents having fire in their backyards. Of the 100 comments, 63 were in favor of allowing recreational open air burning throughout the City. In the end, council put a permit system in place. This term of council wants to revisit the burning by-law and staff along with Fire Chief Scott Selle will provide details for a new possible by-law to be brought forward at a later date.
Last summer, in a coordinated and cooperative effort, staff from Parks and Rec built the pits at Riverside Park, the Fire Department designed and purchased signs, and both departments developed the rules and regulations for use of the pits by the public. Coordinating reservations for these pits and the initial enforcement of the rules surrounding the pits falls on the summer staff at the Kiwanis Field House.
