Wushu has developed and evolved over the course of thousands of years- this weekend it took Arnprior by storm. Directly translated, Wushu is Mandarin for the Chinese martial arts. As part of the Ontario Winter Games, athletes competed in the Taolu, Sanda and Traditional Kung-Fu categories. Alan Tang is the Director of Operations for Wushu Ontario. He explains the differences between the disciplines of Wushu.
Tang believes a respect for the martial arts leads to athletes passionate about the sport.
Among the athletes passionate about Wushu is 12-year-old Lia Tang-Ruggiero, who’s been competing since she was four. The blossoming star recently competed at the 8th World Junior Wushu Championships, securing bronze, silver and gold medals. Tang-Ruggiero breaks down the intricacies of scoring Wushu performances.
This weekends tournament saw athletes ranging from 12 to 29 years-old.
