The City of Pembroke has opened a number of cooling centres for local residents to get some relief from the heat. On Wednesday, July 20th, temperatures in Pembroke and Petawawa got up to 38 Celsius with the humidex for the second day in a row.
Three cooling centres have been opened in the City including at the Pembroke Mall, the Pembroke Library and St. Johns Ambulance.
- The Pembroke Mall (1100 Pembroke Street East) cooling centre is open 10:00am to 7:00pm Monday to Friday and 9:30am to 6:00pm on Saturday.
- The Pembroke Public Library (237 Victoria Street) can be used as a place to cool off from Monday to Thursday between 10:00am and 8:00pm and Friday/Saturday from 10:00am to 5:30pm.
- The cooling centre at St. John Ambulance, located at 310 Mackay Street, is open Monday to Thursday from 8:30am to 4:00pm.
Extreme heat can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and even death. Pembroke Fire Chief Scott Selle is encouraging people to touch base with those who may need assistance, such as the elderly and chronically ill.
