National Indigenous Day in Pembroke continued despite the heavy rain and thunderstorms. Chantel Chadwick, a member of the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation, says the weather this morning (June 21st, 2022) was symbolic.
She says the rain is cleansing the territory and the thunder is the music from ancestors in the spirit world.
Chadwick says it was heartwarming to see people of all ages out learning about Indigenous history and culture.
Chadwick also wanted to recognize people who couldn’t make it out and talked about the hardships they may be going through. Over 100 people gathered at Rotary Park in Pembroke this morning as part of National Indigenous Day.
