A 29-year-old woman has been arrested in Pembroke on a Canada-wide warrant in connection with an alleged fraud involving a municipal government in Nunavut.
The Upper Ottawa Valley detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) says officers with its Offenders Management Apprehension Program located and arrested Hanah Arafiles in Pembroke on Oct. 8.
The arrest follows a fraud investigation launched by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Kugaaruk, Nunavut, in August 2025, after the Hamlet of Kugaaruk reported that a former employee had allegedly defrauded its office earlier that year.
In September 2026, the Nunavut Court of Justice issued a Canada-wide arrest warrant for the former employee.
The Kugaaruk RCMP has charged Arafiles with six offences, including fraud over $5,000, forgery, uttering forged documents, drawing a document without authority, theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime.
Arafiles was released and is scheduled to make her first court appearance on Nov. 2 in Iqaluit, Nunavut.
Police say they will not release further details because the matter is before the courts.
