A local senior is challenging 100 Pembroke residents to walk with her over the coming weeks and to each donate $100 to support the community’s oldest residents.
Melanie Freeman, a resident of the Carefor Civic Complex, is bringing her “March with Melanie” fundraising initiative back this year, allowing residents to sign up to walk with her between October 1st and December 24th to raise money for recreation programming at the Civic Complex and the Carefor Mackay Centre.
Freeman says the event began under a different name last year.
Trevor Eggleton, the director of communications, marketing and fundraising with Carefor, says Freeman has been a resident with the organization for four years and has been an active participant in their fundraising efforts the whole time.
According to Eggleton, Carefor’s goal is to keep its cost of care as low as possible, which is why fundraising initiatives like March with Melanie are important to help ensure the people that liveat their facilities have everything they need.
Last year, the hope was to raise $12,000 through the campaign, and they secured $20,000 in the end. Freeman hopes to raise even more than that this year.
Participants can sign up to raise $100 and walk with Freeman at the event’s webpage.
104.9 myFM is also donating to the fundraiser and challenging 100 local businesses to do the same. Visit the station’s Facebook page for more information.
