Everyone across the Ottawa Valley is invited to honour more than 100 Canadians who fought in the Battle of Britain with Legion Week.
According to the Government of Canada, the battle fought in what’s called the “first commitment of the Royal Canadian Air Force to combat in the Second World War,”
Pembroke Legion president Stan Halliday says Legion Week is designed to bring communities together and remember.
“It’s to get the people who don’t know much about the Legion interested, and see what it’s all about,” he says. “We’ve laid a wreath at the memorial – along with the community -, and we recognized all the veterans.”
Legions across Canada will be hosting a variety of events to generate awareness during this week to aid a variety of ways – including increased membership – something Halliday says the branch has already seen an increase in.
“Anyone can get a free membership until December,” he says. “We went from 400 to 505, and we’re hoping a good percentage stays on and pays for their membership next year.”
The Pembroke Legion has been very active in the community with visits to homes, Remembrance Day, school visits and educating everyone on what being a member means and why they should get involved.
