The sixth annual iteration of a fundraiser supporting women dealing with cancer is coming to the Ottawa Valley this fall.
This year’s iteration of the Walk for Her fundraising initiative is scheduled for October 3rd, bringing together participants from all over the region.
Organizer Lana Gorr says the walk is moving to Stafford Park this year, along with some branding changes.
In recent years, the walk has been held at the Shady Nook Recreation Centre, but according to Gorr, that venue was unavailable. She says that means the event is returning to the place where it began in 2021.
The Walk for Her began in the aftermath of a nonprofit organization Gorr worked for closing its doors in 2020.
The walk was organized over the course of six weeks and raised $13,000. Six days later, Maria passed away.
Today, the event honours breast cancer survivors, and takes place during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
In honour of her late friend, Gorr says each year the event includes the Maria Kendrick Award recognizing someone who has gone above and beyond and shown community spirit.
This year, several different designs will be available for purchase on t-shirts and long-sleeved baseball shirts. Haircuts and a silent auction will also be available.
So far, Walk for Her has raised $134,658 over the years for the Pembroke Regional Hospital’s chemotherapy unit. The goal for this year is to surpass $150,000 in total.
Gorr also says volunteers are being recruited for the event. Details for how to register for the event or volunteer can be found on the Walk for Her website.
