Sunday, Sept. 20, will mark the 45th anniversary of the first Terry Fox Run following Fox’s death on June 28, 1981. Across the country, runners will hit the streets in support of the Terry Fox Foundation. Here in Pembroke, the run will be observed on Sunday, Sept. 27, due to activities surrounding the Royal Canadian Legion’s 100th anniversary taking place the weekend of Sept. 20.
Halliday is the president of Branch 72 of the Pembroke Royal Canadian Legion and has also served as chair of the local Terry Fox Foundation for many years. He says he has seen participation grow steadily over the years, which is very heartening.
The run is a volunteer-led, all-inclusive, non-competitive event with no corporate sponsorship, incentives or fundraising minimum. Participants can run, walk or even bicycle the route if they wish — as long as they take part.
A highlight of the day here in Pembroke will be a free barbecue at the Legion following the run. Stan says it is put on by his family as a thank you to everyone who takes the time to come out and support this very important event.
Halliday says there will be an official kickoff sometime next week, when he and co-chair Brian Abdallah will be placing posters around the city and providing more information about the timing of the event.
If you want to get a jump on signing up and filling out your pledge form, you can find Stan and Brian at a booth this Saturday at Buskerfest all day long.
