Petawawa council has approved a temporary exemption to the municipality’s noise bylaw to allow overnight operation of an asphalt plant supporting the resurfacing of Highway 17 between Chalk River and Point Alexander.
The exemption permits Bonnechere Excavating Inc. to operate its plant on Portage Road from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday evenings through Friday mornings, until Aug. 28.
The overnight hauling generated noise complaints from nearby residents, prompting the contractor to make operational changes where possible.
Overnight highway construction is common for Ministry of Transportation projects on Highway 17 and the Town of Petawawa approved similar temporary noise bylaw exemptions for provincial road work in 2018, 2016 and 2014.
