As National Drowning Prevention Week gets underway, the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP is urging residents and visitors to put water safety first while enjoying beaches, pools, rivers and other waterways this summer.
Police say drownings can occur quickly and often without obvious signs of distress, making constant supervision and preparation essential. Officers are reminding the public to avoid alcohol or cannabis while swimming or operating boats, noting that impaired boating carries the same legal consequences as impaired driving.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to follow the “Arm’s Reach Rule,” staying close enough to immediately assist children in or near the water. Police also stress the importance of eliminating distractions, as active supervision is the best defence against drowning.
Swimmers are advised to be aware of hazards in natural waterways, including strong currents, underwater debris and sudden drop-offs. Officials recommend using designated swimming areas and never entering the water alone.
Anyone boating, kayaking or paddleboarding should wear a properly fitted lifejacket or personal flotation device. Ottawa’s supervised beaches also offer free life jacket loans through the City’s Life Jacket Loaner Program.
If a watercraft capsizes, police advise checking for injuries, staying with the vessel if possible, keeping as much of the body out of the water as possible to reduce the risk of hypothermia, remaining calm and signalling for help.
