Shawville will head to a by-election this fall after the resignation of Mayor Bill McCleary.
McLeary confirmed to myFM News that he has officially resigned from the role following the municipality’s July 14 council meeting, citing difficulties relating to his vision for the town not lining up with the rest of council.
The decision comes just over 8 months after he was re-elected for a second term during the Quebec municipal elections in November 2025.
While he is disappointed to leave the role, McCleary says the situation had been affecting his health.
