The Ontario Provincial Police are reminding drivers to use extra caution around emergency scenes after an officer directing traffic was struck by a vehicle in Pembroke on Thursday afternoon.
The incident happened at about 4:45 p.m. at the intersection of Drive-In Road and Pembroke Street East, where an Upper Ottawa Valley OPP officer was managing traffic because of a lane closure following a collision.
Police say a vehicle turning left from Drive-In Road onto Pembroke Street East struck the officer.
The officer was not injured.
Following an investigation, an 80-year-old Pembroke resident was charged with careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act.
The OPP is using the incident to remind motorists to slow down and remain alert when approaching emergency scenes, construction zones, road closures and roadside work areas.
Police say drivers should follow the directions of traffic control personnel, be prepared for changing traffic patterns and exercise caution to help keep emergency responders and roadside workers safe.
