The Upper Ottawa Valley detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police laid 175 charges during its Canada Day Week traffic safety campaign, with speeding and impaired driving among the most common offences.
The provincewide enforcement campaign ran from June 26 to July 5 and focused on improving safety on roads, waterways and trails by targeting impaired, aggressive and inattentive driving, while also encouraging the use of seatbelts and other lifesaving safety equipment.
During the campaign, Upper Ottawa Valley officers issued 68 speeding charges and five seatbelt-related charges. Police also laid 12 alcohol-related Criminal Code charges.
Marine officers also conducted patrols on area waterways during the campaign. Three people were charged with failing to have a personal flotation device while on the water.
The Ontario Provincial Police says officers will continue to focus on traffic safety beyond the campaign, reminding motorists, boaters and trail users that enforcement remains a priority throughout the year.
