OPP are urging drivers, boaters and off-road users to make safety their top priority as traffic volumes increase during the Canada Day holiday period.
The OPP says 164 people have died in crashes on OPP-patrolled roads so far this year, with speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving and failing to wear a seatbelt remaining the leading causes of fatal collisions.
Officers will increase enforcement across the province throughout one of the busiest travel weeks of the year, targeting dangerous driving behaviours and encouraging motorists to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911.
Police are also reminding those heading onto waterways and trails that wearing lifejackets, helmets and other protective equipment can help prevent serious injuries and save lives. The OPP patrols more than 130,000 kilometres of roadways and nearly 100,000 kilometres of waterways and trails across Ontario.
