The Upper Ottawa Valley Heritage Centre will host archaeologist Em Miller next month as part of its ongoing Speaker Series.
Miller will present “When Are We? Using Historical Maps in Modern Archaeology” on Saturday, June 6 at 1 p.m. at the Upper Ottawa Valley Heritage Centre.
The presentation will explore how historical maps are used in archaeological research and interpretation, while also examining how the documents can reflect the perspectives and biases of the people who created them. Organizers say attendees will learn how archaeologists analyze and interpret historical records to better understand the past.
Admission to the event will be offered on a pay-what-you-can basis, with refreshments available.
The Speaker Series is organized by the Ottawa Valley Historical Society, which operates the heritage centre. The organization says the series is intended to connect residents and visitors with regional history through expert speakers and community discussions.
The Upper Ottawa Valley Heritage Centre houses a collection of more than 10,000 artifacts and serves as a hub for local history and culture in Pembroke.
