The City of Pembroke’s Parks and Recreation Department is once again teaming up with Bogie’s Bar to present the Jim Sloan Memorial Ball Hockey Tournament, set for May 23, 2026, at the Pembroke Memorial Centre starting at 9 a.m.
Organizers say the annual event continues to honour the lasting contributions of Jim Sloan, whose deep community involvement left a strong imprint on the city. Sloan played a key role in helping establish Bogie’s Bar at the Pembroke Memorial Centre and contributed extensively to local committees, fundraising efforts and community events. Alongside his volunteer work, he also served for many years with the Pembroke Police. Known for putting others first, Sloan rarely sought recognition despite his wide-ranging contributions. He passed away in 2018 following a long illness, leaving what organizers describe as a significant and enduring legacy.
The tournament will feature three divisions: youth (ages 7 to 12), intermediate (ages 13 to 15), and adult (16 and over). Games will consist of 20-minute matchups played 4-on-4 plus goalies, with each team required to have a minimum of five players and a maximum of 10.
Registration fees are set at $85 per team for the youth division, $110 for intermediate teams, and $135 for adult squads. All teams are guaranteed at least three games, with competition structured around the Hockey Town Cup, a prize that celebrates Pembroke’s hockey heritage. Winning teams in each division will also receive prize bags for all registered players.
Proceeds from this year’s tournament will be directed to BGC Renfrew County, supporting youth sports programming and related community initiatives across the region.
Registration is open through the city’s online booking system, where team captains or parents must first create or sign in to an individual account before enrolling under the appropriate division. Parents are also required to ensure their child is linked to their household profile to complete registration. Once payment is processed, recreation staff will contact team captains to collect additional details. In-person registration is also available at the Parks and Recreation Office.
The deadline to register is May 15 at 4 p.m.
