The Township of Laurentian Valley is marking May 3 to 9, 2026, as Emergency Preparedness Week, encouraging residents to take steps to better protect themselves and their communities in the event of an emergency.
This year’s local theme, “Prepared Together,” emphasizes the importance of collaboration among neighbours, community groups, municipalities and organizations. Officials say a coordinated approach helps strengthen overall readiness and resilience across Ontario.
The initiative aligns with the national theme, “Be Prepared. Know Your Risks,” led by Public Safety Canada, as well as Ontario’s Provincial Emergency Management Strategy and Action Plan, which focuses on keeping communities safe and prepared.
Emergency Preparedness Week is observed across the country through a joint effort involving municipal, provincial and territorial emergency management organizations.
Local officials are urging residents to use the week as an opportunity to review their own preparedness plans. Common risks in the region include ice storms, windstorms, flooding and extreme heat.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed by following official emergency management social media channels and accessing online resources provided by provincial and federal agencies. Weather updates are also available through Environment Canada’s WeatherCAN app.
Mayor Steve Bennett said the township will share tips and information throughout the week to help residents understand potential local hazards and how to prepare for them year-round.
“Follow township social media channels all week for guidance on emergency preparedness,” Bennett said. “Residents who prefer printed materials can contact the township office to obtain them.”
Officials also recommend that households create a 72-hour emergency plan and assemble an emergency kit. Basic plans can be completed in as little as 10 to 15 minutes, using items already available at home along with a few additional supplies.
More information on emergency preparedness is available through provincial resources and on the township’s website.
